If you’ve tried lots of expensive hair products and have been disappointed by the results, I recommend you try these ten DIY recipes for soft natural hair.

The thing is that your natural hair becomes dry when the hair shafts does not absorb or retain enough moisture, resulting in a brittle and dull looking hair. While there are lots of products that you can use to treat dry hair, there is no guarantee that your hair will respond well to these products. So instead of spending money trying out several products, you can instead use some natural ingredients that you have in your kitchen to address your dry hair.

If you’re wondering about the types of products that are in your kitchen that you can use in your hair, here is a list of ten food items that you can use right away.

1. Olive Oil
Olive oil is probably the most popular DIY ingredient for dry hair because of it’s rich in Vitamin E and antioxidants which helps to heal damaged hair by improving the health of the cuticle. Olive oil is often used as a hot oil hair treatment to strengthen, add shine and restore moisture to dry hair.

How To: Warm an adequate amount of olive oil in a warm water bath. Then apply it on dry hair. Cover your hair with a fleece hat, towel or heating cap for at least 30minutes. Then, shampoo and deep condition your hair afterwards. It’s recommended that you do this treatment at least once a week.

2. Mayonnaise
Mayonnaise is full of fat, protein and oils which helps to treat dry hair and repair damage. It also adds shine and softness to the hair.

How To: Apply about a cup of full fat mayonnaise on dry hair. Cover your hair with a plastic cap and let product sit in for about an hour. Rinse product out of your hair with cool water and then proceed to shampooing and conditioning. It’s advised that you do this treatment weekly for longer lasting results.

3. Eggs
Eggs are full of protein, lecithin, and fat which all help to strengthen and repair damaged and lifeless hair.

How To: Mix together three eggs, two tablespoons of olive oil and one tablespoon of honey. Apply this mixture to damp hair and scalp. Cover with a plastic cap and let it sit for about 30minutes. Rinse off with cool water and then proceed to shampooing and conditioning. TO remove the strong smell of egg from your hair, I advise you use a sweet smelling shampoo and conditioner, or you can ad a few drops of essential oils such as lemon grass, jasmine oil or lemon oil.

4. Honey is a great humectant which helps to attract moisture into hair, prolong moisture retention, soften the hair, add shine and improve elasticity. This is why honey is a popular DIY ingredient for dry hair.

How To: Mix about two tablespoons of honey, four tablespoons of olive oil, two tablespoons of glycerin with your deep conditioner. Apply on freshly cleansed hair and cover with a plastic cap, wrap hair with a heating cap and leave product in your hair for at least 45minutes.

5. Aloe Vera
Aloe vera gel or aloe vera juice are common ingredients in hair and skin care products due to their high hydrating properties.

How To: Add a splash of aloe vera juice to your leave-in conditioner or hair spritz. You can also mix some aloe vera gel with your styling product or moisturizer, for added moisture.

6. Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is a healthy fat which not only makes for a great cooking oil, it is also a great moisturizer. This light oil easily penetrates the hair shaft to help protect the hair. When used as a pre-shampoo treatment, coconut oil helps to prevent protein loss during the shampoo stage.

How To: Apply generous amounts of coconut oil on dry hair and cover hair with a shower cap. Let this sit in the hair overnight, and shampoo and deep condition as usual. You can also use coconut oil to seal the hair after applying your leave-in conditioner.

7. Avocado
The saturated fats, vitamins A and E, and protein in avocado are highly beneficial for dry and damaged hair. Avocado also helps add moisture to dry hair shafts and strengthen your hair.

How To: Mash one ripe avocado and mix with one tablespoon of olive oil, jojoba oil and honey if desired. For a smoother paste, blend this mixture in a blender, this way, you won’t end up with chunks of avocado in your hair.  Apply the mixture on freshly washed hair, from the roots to the ends. Cover your hair with a shower cap. Leave it on for about 30 minutes and then shampoo your hair with lukewarm water.

8. Bananas
The high potassium and moisture content in bananas helps to softens and improve the elasticity of your hair.
How To: Use a blender to blend one ripe banana, one tablespoon of almond oil and two tablespoons of honey. Apply this hair mask on your hair thoroughly. Leave it on for 20 to 30 minutes and then rinse well with lukewarm water.

9. Apple Cider Vinegar
Vinegar helps remove product build-up, restore the natural pH level of the scalp and treat itching and dandruff. When the hair is clean, it’s able to take in moisture and maintain an adequate moisture level.

How To: Mix one-half cup of apple cider vinegar with one cup of water. Use the solution to rinse your hair after washing it. Allow it to sit for 10 minutes and then rinse it out well.

10. Coconut Milk & Yogurt

This combination used to be known as a natural relaxer because it’s known to soften hair and improve the texture of your hair. I’ve had an amazing result with this combination when I tried it.

How To: Combine equal parts of yogurt and coconut milk in a small bowl. You can also add either olive oil or coconut oil for some slip effect. Apply the combination on freshly cleansed hair, allow to sit for about 20 minutes, then rinse off with room temperature water. You can either proceed to styling or wash off the yogurt smell from your hair by doing a co-wash.
