Bantu knots, also known as Zulu knots, are a traditional African hairstyle that has been worn for centuries by women of various ethnic groups across the continent.
This iconic look is created by sectioning the hair into small squares or triangles and twisting the strands into tight, spiraled knots that sit close to the scalp.
Beyond their striking aesthetic, Bantu knots serve as a powerful symbol of cultural identity and pride. They are celebrated for their versatility, functioning both as a standalone protective style and as a method to achieve heatless, bouncy “knot-out” curls.
Today, they remain a staple in Black hair culture, blending ancient tradition with modern fashion.
How do I maintain my hair while in Bantu Knots?
The most important thing for maintaining a style is to wrap it up at night before you go to sleep.
Covering the hair at night with a scarf will keep the hair in place while you sleep.
Keep your hair moisturized with a leave-in conditioner spray so it does not become dry and frizzy. Bantu Knots doesn’t look good when they’re dry and frizzy.
Add some edge control gel on your edges to keep them looking new and some hair oil on your scalp to prevent dry scalp.
How can I sleep in Bantu Knots?
Despite how cute this style is, I know some of you are cringing just thinking about sleeping in them!
First of all, the best way to preserve any style is to cover your hair with a satin bonnet or scarf at night.
However, it can be tough to keep them on at night with this style, so another great alternative is to have satin pillowcases and sheets. An edge scarf will keep your edges and baby hairs from frizzing up while you toss and turn at night.
Now, due to the bumps all over your head and the tightness of them, it can be difficult to find a comfortable sleeping position.
The best sleeping position would be on your sides. You may be tempted to sleep on your stomach to protect your hair whilke you sleep, but this sleeping position is not good for your back. So to protect your hair and back at night, it’s best to sleep on your sides.
How long do Bantu Knots last?
If taken care of, Bantu Knots can last up to two weeks or more, depending on how it was done and how you maintain your hair. It’s best not to keep styles in for too long so you don’t create much damage, and depending on how tight you make the knots, leaving the style in for a lengthy period can cause damage to your roots.
Covering it with a bonnet or scarf can prolong it of course, but there really can be too much of a good thing sometimes so let it go when it’s time. Give your scalp a chance to breathe.
When you feel like switching things up for a different look, simply unravel the knots to wear your hair in Bantu knot-outs.
