40 Flattering Flat Twists Protective Natural Hairstyles To Feel Stunning In 2024

One thing I find the most attractive about natural hair is the ability to style the hair into a variety of hairstyles. As a long-term 4c hair queen, my go-to hairstyle is often flat twists. They are quick and easy to put in and take down, and they look so unique.

Eventhough this hairstyle has been around for a very long time, it still remains a mystery amongst many hair professionals who are already used to working with cornrows. This is because, unlike cornrows where you work with three sections of hair at a time, you only need two sections of hair for flat twists.

Another thing I love about flat twists is that they are more gentle on the hair than traditional cornrows, since you don’t have to pull the hair as much. They are also a beautiful hairstyle for someone who doesn’t like to sit on the stylist’s chair for so long and prefers to change their hairstyle every few weeks.

I enjoy styling my hair in flat twists, and this is why in this post, I want to recommend more flat twists hairstyles to compliment a previous post I wrote about the same hairstyle.

Are Flat Twists a Good Protective Hairstyle For Natural Hair?

Yes, Flat twists are good and healthy for natural hair. The good thing about this hairstyle is that it is low manipulation which means that you don’t have to do much to your hair. Even if you will be adding hair extensions to your hair, it won’t feel heavy because you will be using Marley hair which is lightweight.

You have to caution your hairstylist not to twist too tight when handling your hair.

Can You Wash Your Hair in Flat Twists?

You can wash your hair in flat twists. However, it’s important to note that flat twists are not typically made tight, and the style can easily come loose with too much manipulation.

So, it is best to avoid washing the hair in this style unless completely necessary. If you do want to wash your hair in flat twists, it might be best to use a dry shampoo and only apply it to the lines along the scalp, and be extremely gentle with your hand movements when washing.

Should I Wash My Hair Before Getting Flat Twists?

Before installing any new style, it is always best to start with freshly washed hair, especially for flat twists. If your hair is dirty and filled with build-up, the style will look dull and frizzy. Unclean hair will also make it harder for your flat twists to be tight and firm, which means they won’t last long.

How Long Do Flat Twists Last?

Your flat twists can last anywhere from one to six weeks. It all depends on the hairstyle you go for, the texture of your hair, your lifestyle, and how you care for your hair while it’s in flat twists.

Flat twists with hair extensions will last longer because your hair is protected by the extensions. Tighter curls such as 4c hair will hold a style longer than type 3 hair. Smaller-sized flat twists will last longer than chunkier ones. And flat twists done on dry hair will last longer than those done on damp hair.

To prolong the lifespan of your flat twists, it’s recommended to go to bed with a satin scarf rather than a satin bonnet, so that your hair stays in place while you sleep. To moisturize your hair, spray your hair with a leave-in conditioner spray to avoid manipulating your hair too much.

When it’s time to take down your hairstyle, you can wear a flat twist out for a few more days before deciding to wash your hair for a brand-new style.

How Do You Make Flat Twists Last Long?

Flat twists are a great protective style, but one of the downsides is that they often don’t last long, as most people’s flat twists start to loosen after about a week.

To make the style last longer, it is essential to cover the hair with a silk bonnet or scarf before going to bed. After a few days, you can apply some hair mousse to smooth down your hair so it still looks good. For an added touch, you can define your edges with an edge control gel, and you’re ready for the day!

Can You Flat Twist Short Hair?

You can absolutely flat twist your short natural hair. As long as your hair is at least 3 inches or longer, your hair can be flat twisted. If your hair is shorter than three inches or you want to give your style a firmer hold, you can add some Marley hair to make your flat twists look fuller and longer.

How To Do Flat Twists on Natural Hair

Flat twists are similar to traditional cornrows. The only difference is that you will be working with two strands of hair, rather than three. This means that it is much faster to flat twist than it is to cornrow.

In the video below, Tyiece shows different ways to flat twist the hair so that you can choose the method that works best for you.

Whatever method you choose, you want to make sure that you start with freshly washed, detangled, and moisturized hair, so that your flat twist turns out looking smooth and healthy.

It’s also best to work with stretched dry hair and avoid adding too much product in your hair. Otherwise, you may get a different result from what you’re looking for.

How To Do Flat Twists With Feed-In Hair Extensions?

Just like regular feed-in cornrows, you can also flat twist your hair with added hair extensions by feeding the hair in gradually. To ensure that your hairstyle looks naturally smooth, you will need to add little pieces of hair at a time, roll your hair around the extensions, and flat twist gently.

For a natural look, it’s best to work with dry and stretched hair, so that your hair can easily blend with the extensions without having any frizz.
