How to Set Smart Goals For Your Natural Hair

Happy New Year Peeps! I know 2015 will be your best year ever! If you’re one of the millions of people who set New Years resolutions at the beginning of the year but are quick to give up by January 7th, let me be the first to congratulate you on reading this post.

Setting New Years resolutions shows that you are on a path to self improvement and would really like to do something about to become a better person. No matter where you are in life, there is always room for improvement in different aspects in your life. When it comes to our natural hair, starting a natural hair journey and staying on the path to healthy hair can be difficult and discouraging at times. However, to have a smooth sailing ride, you will need to set goals so that your journey can be more pleasurable, predictable and successful. The natural hair community is ever revolving, so it’s easy for a newbie to drown in all the contradicting information that they come across daily. But, when you set concrete goals for yourself, you can easily ignore trendy hairstyles, products and other tips which will just be a distraction for you.

Since this is a natural hair website and not a goal setting website, I won’t dwell on the topic of goal setting too much and will get straight to the point. To get more information on how to set natural hair goals for yourself, please send me an email or subscribe to the mailing list where I will be doing a monthly check-in with my subscribers.

How do you set SMART goals for your Natural Hair?

SMART Goals

SMART Goals

S – Specific: Do you want to be able to wear more natural hairstyles with just your hair? Want to learn more about growth? moisture? Black hair care? Black hair science? What would you like to achieve with your hair this year? Make sure they are specific and you WRITE them down.

M – Meaningful: Are you just jumping on the bandwagon of Natural hair care? Do you just want long hair because most natural hair pictures you see online are of women with BIG hair? Why do you want to transition to Natural hair? In what ways will learning more about Black hair care help you personally?

A – Actionable: Action really speaks louder than words. Simply writing down your goals won’t get the job down. Same way downloading a new recipe online won’t make you lunch to eat; simply wishing, thinking about and writing down your goals won’t help you achieve more moisture, grow longer hair or master flat twists. You WILL need to take proactive steps into making those goals a reality.

R – Realistic/Reasonable: Does your hair only grow 0.5″ a month? If so, then don’t expect to retain 12 inches of new growth in a year. Don’t even expect to retain 6″ of hair by December 2015, because you will lose some hair to breakage, hair trims and regular wear and tear. Taking hair growth pills and using the best natural hair products in the market will not necessary help you achieve your goals fast. So make sure your goals are realistic and reasonable.

T – Trackable: How will you know if you’re actually getting results? If you don’t do length checks because you think they’re dumb, then may be you shouldn’t be setting a hair growth goal for yourself. How would you know if your hair is retaining moisture if it’s always in a weave? How will you know if your cornrow skills are getting better overtime if you never take pictures each time you cornrow your hair? When we set goals for ourselves and we see progress, it gives us the motivation to keep going until we fully achieve those goals and we can then set bigger goals for ourselves. It’s also important to keep a journal where you can track your failures, successes, progress and set backs.
