Top Five Natural Hair Sealing Products

After you’ve moisturized your hair, the next step is to apply your choice of oil or hair butter on your hair to seal in moisture.

You see, in comparison to straight hair, the twists and turns in natural hair do not allow the natural oils (sebum) that are produced by the scalp to be distributed throughout the length of the hair. And so for this reason, coily hair tends to be dry, while straight hair tends to be greasy and must be washed often.

Since our hair is lacking this essential nutrient, it is up to us to directly apply oil on our hair to keep it looking healthy and shiny. Aside from sealing moisture into the hair and preventing dryness, oils also help to lubricate the hair so that there is less friction amongst the hair and fewer chances for frizz, knots and tangles.

While there are so many oils out there to use, here are the top 5 oils that Naturals love to use in their hair and that I also use in my hair.

1) Whipped Shea Butter

This is actually my go-to sealant as it doesn’t leave my hair feeling greasy. And since I like to twist my hair, I would often use shea butter as a styler, instead of the typical curling pudding.

Shea butter also gives my hair a smooth and silky feeling, especially when I use it to style dry hair. I also notice that my hair often feels soft and fluffy when I use shea butter, so you can see why this product is my favourite. Oh, did I mention that I use it on my skin as well?

Since shea butter doesn’t have the greatest scent in the world, I always whip my Shea butter up with a selection of carrier oils and essential oils so that it can smell like sunshine and roses.

2) Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO)

This oil is probably the most magical hair product that has ever been discovered by the ladies in the natural hair community. When used consistently, it has been reported that JBCO can help to stimulate hair growth, thicken the hair and provide a healthy hair appearance.

3) Oil Blend

Many Naturals just like myself can’t stick to using just one oil. We want to get all the benefits from as many oils as possible, and so we will mix great oils like castor oil, olive oil and a few other carrier oils and essential oils together in one bottle.

These oil blends are usually formulated with oils that helps to provide maximum sealing properties for y

our hair, which helps to keep your hair moisturized and minimize breakage.

4) Jojoba Oil

Another popular hair oil. Found to have a chemical composition that is similar to the sebum found on the scalp, jojoba oil is also another oil that has been found to improve scalp health and help with hair growth. This light oil is perfect for Naturals with fine hair.

5) Coconut Oil

Solid in the winter and liquid in the summer, coconut oil is a sweet-smelling oil that has taken the world by storm in the past few years. And it’s definitely not a surprise that it will be a popular topic of discussion in the natural hair community.

Coconut oil is very thin and so it absorbs into the hair. When used moderately, coconut oil can help to restore shine and provide the hair with a healthy gloss. Due to it’s absorbing nature, coconut oil is also another great oil for fine hair.
