60 Beautiful Two-Strand Twists Protective Styles on Natural Hair for 2024 Winter

Two-strand twists are the easiest form of protective hairstyle you can do on your natural hair because they are easy to put in and takedown.

In fact, you can find me in two-strand twists about 90% of the time that my natural hair is out.

This is why I am excited to write this post about beautiful two-strand twist hairstyles you can style your natural hair in.

What are the benefits of two-strand twists that make them so popular?

Two-strand twists are popular in the natural hair community because they are easy to put in and take down.

All you need are two strands of your hair that you simply wrap around each other. These hairstyles are so easy that a child can do them.

Also, two-strand twists do not need added hair extensions, excess hair tools, or lots of products.

All you need are your fingers and a twisting cream if you choose to twist on wet hair.

They are also tension-free because you don’t need to pull on your scalp like other hairstyles such as cornrows.

These hairstyles also help promote growth, reduce breakage, prevent shrinkage, and retain moisture.

Two-strand twists are also perfect for any woman or child on-the-go because they can last for a week or a month.

Why do my two-strand twists look different from a tutorial I saw online?

The way your two-strand twists turns out depends on the texture of your hair, length, the health of your hair, and whether you twist on dry or wet hair.

This is why in this post, I will be sharing 60 different two-strand twist hairstyles that show how versatile this hairstyle is on different hair lengths and textures.

So while this blog focuses on 4c hair, I have decided to also show how two-strand twists look on looser hair textures like type 3 hair.

This way, you can have a more realistic expectation of how your twists should turn out, the next time you twist your hair.

Are two-strand twists a protective hairstyle?

Yes, two-strand twists are a form of protective hairstyle, they are also known as a low manipulation hairstyle because you don’t need to do much with them, like twist-outs.

Any hairstyle that protects your hair from daily manipulation and protects your ends from rubbing against your clothes and shoulders is a protective style.

You don’t have to put your hair in hair extensions to protect your hair.

Can you wash your hair with two-strand twists?

Yes, you can wash your hair while it’s in two-strand twists.

The only thing is that your hair may frizz up, tangle, and start to turn into locs after you wash it.

So to reduce the frizz, some women may wear a stocking over their head and just massage the scalp gently so that they don’t disturb the twists.

How can I keep my two-strand twists from getting frizzy?

Depending on how you twist your hair, it can take up to a week before you start noticing some frizz.

So to prolong the smooth look of your hairstyle, you should always go to bed with a satin bonnet or a silk scarf.

I prefer to wear a scarf so that my hair stays in one place and won’t move around so much while I sleep.

To moisturize, use a water-based hair spray that doesn’t require rubbing the products on your hair as a cream-based moisturizer does.

You should also minimize how often you moisturize your hair, because water temporarily expands your hair and then shrinks it as water evaporates from your hair.

This expansion and shrinkage will eventually lead to frizz.

And lastly, try to reduce over-manipulation because it can lead to frizzy two-strand twists.

Is it better to do two-strand twist on wet or dry hair?

There isn’t a better way to twist your hair. I often twist my hair while wet because this is my go-to hairstyle after washing it.

So when it comes to whether or not you should twist on wet or dry hair, think about the look you’re going for.

When you twist on dry hair, you will get a more polished and stretched look, whereas, twisting on wet hair will look shrunken, just like what Esther of @gameoffros showed in this side-by-side image.

two strand twist on wet or dry hair

How do you keep two-strand twists moisturized?

Keeping two-strand twists moisturized is very easy, this is the reason why it’s my favorite hairstyle.

Unlike other protective hairstyles that require hair extensions, moisture actually stays longer in two-strand twists, which means that you can retain moisture much longer.

You can either use a cream-based leave-in conditioner such as the ones recommended in this post, or use one of these curl refreshing sprays.

How do I maintain my hair while in two-strand twists?

To maintain your hair and make your hairstyle last long, you should always go to bed with a satin bonnet or a silk scarf. Keep your hair moisturized a few times a week and try not to rub your hair too much.

To switch up your look, you can get creative with your two-strand twists by putting your hair up into a bun, updo, flat twists, or whatever style you fancy.

And when it’s time to take down the hairstyle, you can turn your two-strand twists into twist-outs for a few days.

You can even get creative with the twist-out for a few more days before washing your hair for the next hairstyle!

As you can see, two-strand twists are versatile and fun to wear, which is why it’s my go-to hairstyle.

What products can I use to twist my hair?

To twist your hair into two-strand twists, you can use one of these curl-defining creams recommended in this post.

If you’re on a protein-free hair regimen, you can try one of these protein-free curl-defining creams. Also, if you will be twisting your hair when it’s dry, you can use shea butter to twist your hair.

What’s the difference between two-strand twists and flat twists?

Two-strand twists are almost like single braids or plaits, except you only wrap two strands of hair around each other.

Whereas, flat twists are like cornrows, except you twist two strands of hair over each other.

What’s cool is that you can style your hair both in two-strand twists and flat twists for a unique look, just like what Esther did in this image below.

flat twists vs. twists

How do I make my two-strand twists look fuller?

If you have fine hair or low-density hair, your twists can look flat and lifeless. To add some fullness and bounce to your hair, you can add some kinky hair extensions to your hair when twisting.

How do I keep my two-strand twists from unraveling?

Most kinky hair will not unravel when you twist your hair. But if you have a curly hair texture like 3a or 3b hair, then you can add some gel to the ends of your hair to hold your hair together.

You can also twist with a styling gel like Curlsmith Curl Defining Styling Souffle which is formulated for curly or wavy hair.

How do I prep my hair for the best two-strand twists?

To get your twists to look the way you envision, you will need to start with clean and detangled hair that has been moisturized.

You can wash your hair with one of these shampoos, deep condition with one of these deep conditioners, and moisturize with one of these leave-in conditioners.

Having moisturized hair will give your hair shine, and detangling your hair will give you smooth and polished twists.

If you want your two-strand twists to turn out looking juicy, you will need to twist on damp (not soaking wet) hair using a curl-defining cream such as the ones here.

What is the easiest way to do two-strand twists?

This tutorial by Gloria Ann is a classic two-strand twist tutorial that shows how to do this easy hairstyle on short hair.

From the tutorial, you will notice that she started with dry hair which she moisturized with Uncle Funky’s Daughter Extra Butter Cream and then twisted with Uncle Funky’s Daughter Curly Magic after detangling with a Denman brush.

Adding both products make the hair damp, but not too wet. Twisting wet hair will turn out looking frizzy and rough.

To keep her ends from unraveling, she twirled the ends of the twists so that they stay curly and smooth.

The end result of this tutorial is juicy two-strand twists that look healthy, moisturized, and beautiful! No matter the length of your hair.

Be sure to moisturize your hair prior to styling with a leave-in conditioner such as TGIN Butter Cream Daily Moisturizer.

These twists were done on dry hair that is free of any hair product. Esther might have added some shea butter when twisting to help lock moisture in.

She also twisted on partly stretched hair, which she combed out before twisting.

This hairstyle came out looking frizzy because the client’s hair wasn’t moisturized prior.

If you want a smoother look, it’s advised to moisturize your hair a few hours before, so that the product can absorb into your hair prior to styling.

This hairstyle was done on dry and stretched 4c hair. To get this fluffy look, you will loosely twist your hair, and only use an oil-based product like shea butter.

You want to minimize using water-based products on this hairstyle because it will shrink quickly. Also, this hairstyle may not last more than a week, as it will start to look frizzy after a few days.

So if you will be going for a similar hairstyle, you shouldn’t expect to wear it for more than a week.

8. Mini Two-Strand Twists on 4a Hair

These mini twists were done on long and dense hair to provide fullness and thickness.

The good thing about this hairstyle is that you can style it into different hairstyles.

You can also curl your hair using mini-perm rods or do Bantu knots to keep the roots stretched and ends curled.

23. Fluffy Medium-Sized Two-Strand Twists

Often times when I re-twist my hair after it has dried out, I have to admit that this is how my hair usually turns out. Soft, fluffy, and bouncy!

What I usually do is that I will twist my hair in chunks after washing and deep conditioning it.

Then a few days later, I will take down those super jumbo twists and re-twist them into smaller sections using a thick twisting cream or leave-in conditioner.

31. Two-Strand Twists on Medium Length 4c Hair

It’s important to enjoy your natural hair when it’s still short because the truth is that there are several hairstyles you won’t be able to achieve once your hair grows out.

Also, lots of naturals with long hair become lazy and sometimes too busy to deal with all of that hair on their head, so they put it in a bun most of the time.

This hairstyle can be achieved with only a leave-in conditioner and twisting cream or butter.

32. Soft and Fluffy Two Strand Twists with Accessories

One of the benefits of wearing your natural hair out as much as possible is that it allows you to see the state of your hair and adjust your hair regimen when needed.

This is why two-strand twists are my go-to protective hairstyle. You can tell how healthy and soft this hair is, just by looking at the picture.

What this hair needs to maintain its health is moisture and more moisture!

33. Bouncy Two-Strand Twists on Colored 4c Hair

36. Loose Mini Twists on 4a Hair

Alicia James was the queen of mini twists on 4a/b hair a few years ago. I remember watching her twist her super long natural hair on her YouTube channel back in the day.

If you have lots of time on your hands, then you can do this hairstyle because it takes days to finish.

37a. Micro Twists on Long 4a Hair

Aside from her loose twists, Alicia James was also famous for her micro twists, which she did all by herself!

Due to the length of her hair, she was able to wear her twists for several weeks at a time, sometimes up to 12 weeks!

mini twists on long 4c hair

After your micro twists start to become frizzy due to new growth, you can change up the style by curling it with perm rods or braiding your twists in chunks for days at a time, so that you can get a wavy or curly look.

38. Mini Twists on High Density 4b Hair

If you have dense hair or a lot of hair on your head, your mini twists will look different from what you see online. In this case, Victoria from classycurlies were able to achieve a fuller mini twist look with her voluminous hair.

When you compare Victoria’s hair to Alicia’s hair, you can easily assume she has normal-sized twists, even though they are actually mini-twists.

This is why for this post, I decided to show sixty different two-strand twist hairstyles on both type 3 and type 4 hair with different hair lengths and hair densities.

This way, you can have a realistic expectation of how your hair should look like when it’s done.

This hair looks frizzy because it might have been done on wet hair and it probably wasn’t detangled properly prior to twisting.

To get a more defined look, you will need to twist on damp hair with a twisting cream like the Adwoa Beauty Boamint Moisturizing Curl Defining Cream.

Twisting on soaking wet hair causes the hair to expand excessively, which can make the finished hairstyle look frizzy and old.
